What I’ve found from teaching piano lessons to kids and adults for over ten years is that every person is different, and that traditional, “one-size-fits-all” approaches are ineffective. Yes, I am there to teach, but I have to learn every student. The way I teach, explain concepts, or try to motivate is going to depend on the type of person my student is. 

I have many students who do just fine and are quite content learning solely out of a piano method book. Others, however, don’t do well learning that way. As the teacher, I am continuously assessing my methods to make sure that my students are being adequately challenged with material that is interesting to them. 

I am truly interested in my students as unique individuals with their own set of creative faculties. My students view practicing as an activity that’s not choresome or forced at all, but rather something to look forward to, something that’s enjoyable and even relaxing.
